Is a nutrition degree a good field to study?for those of you who had already done it, was it worth the time? |
for those people who had already graduated and became R.D's or just a plain nutrition major. was it worth the time and effort ? are you pleased or do you think it is a major not worth it now a days, i am interested in it but i am a bit afraid about finding a job afterwards. is it a good field to consider ? for those of you who had ALREADY done, please help me out ..if you would go back in time, would you spend the 4 years doing something else? all answers are appreciated :) Alright, let me go ahead and give you my nutrition education background...I graduated with the nutrition degree without pursuing the dietetic internship. I say I didn't pursue...it was more like I didn't get an internship. At that point it took me several months to get a job and the one I'm currently at has nothing to do with nutrition and I make only 25,000/year with NO benefits. I can basically do nothing with this degree without the internship. I have several other friends who graduated with the degree and didn't get the internship. One works managing a Kroger, the other is a bank teller, and another is a babysitter. Now with that being said, I had several friends that did get an internship and had no problem getting a job. I've only heard two of them complain...one works in a diabetes center and complains of boredom but makes 40,000/year (that's with a master's degree in nutrition as well). Make sure you know all the information possible about the program. When I started into the degree I was not aware of having to complete an internship that required me to apply to it (which can only be done twice a year), wait for an answer back, pay at least 4 or 5 grand to that program, work for free for the entire intern (anywhere from 6 months to a year), and finally not be a dietition until you take the RD (study, study, study). As far as the length of the intern, there are very few 6 month interns and most of them start in January. It will take a good five years minimum to become a dietition (school, internship, and exam). Check out the American Dietetic Association website under the student section. It will give you lots of info and provide you a list of schools that are accredited, which is extremely important. If I could go back I wouldn't have gotten a nutrition degree. Let's see what else I can tell you...Now some of my friends that didn't pursue the internship only got the degree to get into dental school and med school. If you have anymore questions for me just ask. You can contact me at debbiesmith82@yahoo.com...sorr... about that meant to leave my email. Report It |
