I am an X-ray Tech and also have a PHD in nutrition. Should I be able to call myself "Dr." at work ?

Since I have a PHD I refer to myself as Dr. ____ in professional settings. I was told by the hospital administrators not to refer to myself as a "Dr." because in a hospital environment it may cause confusion with being an MD. I feel like I'm being stripped of my credentials by these policy wonks. Should I get a lawyer. Are the right in asking me not to call myself a "Dr."?

Part of the reason why I want to use my "Dr." title is so people don't think I'm gay male nurse.

I would address myself as Dr. The healthcare field has a tendency to attract a large number of homosexuals. If they dont let you call yourself Dr at work then slap a discrimination suit in their face.

Personally, I think it is strange if you have your PhD in a certain field, but you are working in another. What is the point of having an advanced degree, such as your PhD, but working in a position that is achievable by attending a community college. In this work environment, I would say no, it is not suitable for your to call yourself a doctor. Ask yourself, Would you consider it proper for a mechanic to come into your X-ray station and introduce himself as Mechanic Mike. No because it is not relevant to the work that he is preforming. Please be professional.

And as far as not wanting to be classified as gay. If you try not to stand out, it will only make you stick out further. Go with the flow. Don't try to be a rebel rouser.

Not unless you want people at work to hate you. They will think you think you are better than them, and they will dislike you. They will feel inferior. I wouldn't recommend it, whether you have the credentials or not. And you really don't want people to think you're a doctor, because when an emergency happens and a REAL medical doctor is needed, they will call you, and you will be useless and look like a fool.

No, they are not right, when you earn your Phd you also earn the right to be called Dr whether it be in medicine, english, music or whatever.
