Help understanding nutrition, carbs versus calories, & weight gain?

I am trying to wean off the atkins diet, I have been on it for over 2 years and am trying to understand how 3500 calories equals a matter no matter how carbohydrate-y those calories are. I also understand that 1g of carbs = 4 calories. I do not understand however, how I am told that I will not put weight back on after coming off atkins and just counting my calories and watching my overall caloric intake. Please, only professional or experienced answers only. Will I be able to not gain weight if I begin to just watch my calories and begin to eat the recommended amount of daily carbohydrates?

I think you would put weight back on...
Because...
The Atkins approach is that you gain weight when your blood sugar spikes. If you start eating the "recommended " amount of carbs again, despite how many calories you eat, your blood sugar is likely to spike again and thus you have your weight back.
Maybe not, everyone is different, but I would be very careful.
