Obesity a result of market failure or market sucess?

just any thoughts

Market success of selling concepts like "low fat" and "sugar free" to the public as being less likely to cause weight gain. Marketing success ofselling diets to people as a substitute for proper eating habits and exercise.

Obesity is not the fault of the products or the companies who provide them, it is the fault of the consumers looking for ways to cheat in everything they do.

market failure of sugar, market success of high frictose corn syrup... get rid of the latter and see how far and fast obesity rates drop as a whole

failure or success in the market is only due to the poor choices a consumer make in the use of any given product. Finding ways to get around eating right and exercising via low sugar, low carb this or that is not the answer. Put the fork & remote down and pick up a routine even if it's a walk around the park.

The market will only go where the consumer directs it to go. We cannot blame obesity on the market. It is not the markets fault that we, as a whole have very poor portion control. It is not the markets fault that we love fatty foods as well as foods high in simple sugars. It is not the markets fault that we want our cake and eat it too. It is our fault as a society. The market will move to where society demands that it goes. Take a look at Trans Fats.... Society said they did not want them, Uncle Sam said you have to tell society if you use them, and as a result the market now produces goods that are trans fat free. Bottom line
Obesity is a result of society's failure on which the market has capitalized.

I think obesity is due to the hormones in milk. People gain weight differently than they did 15 years ago. Their body shape is different.

Given that, I think that it is not a market-driven question, in that it is not a demand of consumers that is being supplied. I don't think that people are consuming more dairy, maybe less, than 15 years ago, but just getting more fat from it.

As opposed to sugar/corn syrup being added to many foods wherein people may just like the taste more without knowing or wanting the sugar/corn syrup and then buy more of that item.

Of course, getting more exercise and less processed foods would help, but wouldn't make a big impact, I feel.

I live in the fittest state in the country, and still young girls are so much bigger than in my generation. When we were that age, we COULDN"T gain weight no matter how much we ate. And even the big girls were just big all over, it was their physiology. Not just big in the belly.

I guess, it would be most certainly market failure when the customer base is dying off earlier. It costs a lot more money to obtain new customers than it is to retain old ones.
