Study shows link between smoking and obesity and divorce. Why would that be?

Just curious as to why. Does the weight gain make your partner less appealing?

My hubbie gained a few (or more) pounds but that's just makes him more like a teddy bear to me.

What's the correlation?

I guess I could kinda see the smoking one, but people don't usually start smoking AFTER they're married, do they?

Obesity and divorce I can definately see, too many people change their weight after marriage particularly women. Personally I don't think thats fair to their spouse. If they wanted a fat spouse they would have married one. Why let that happen? Its being selfish and unfair, now they are stuck with someone who they can't stand seeing naked. So much for a sex life. I am a firm believer in keeping yourself up for your spouse and weight is number 1. Then they wonder why they get cheated on. Smoking is usually started before marriage and its probably accepted by the spouse before they become married and after married the daggers come out and they try to change them.

i would say that smoking as well as eating are releases. A way to get away from your problems. So your upset at your spouse, instead of talking to them and working it out you bottle it up and have a smoke to calm your nerves or have some cake to make you feel better. Then your like you know what ok i dont care, but really inside you really do. So then the next thing comes and you do it again. And all of theese things are pileing up inside and then you snap. You have terrible fights and a poor relation ship with poor communication. On top of that your partner doesnt find you attractive anymore even because your now fat or smoke like a chimmney. So whats left, the relationship sucks and there is no physical attraction. Only thing left is divorce

I think it speaks more to attitude. Obese people are more likely to be depressed, and I think that can seep into the relationship...

Also, with the smoking... it says you are more likely to engage in risky behavior, and maybe a more risky relationship?? That might be a strech.

If you and your hubby have put on a few pounds, that's a far cry from being obese.

Well let's see....I quit smoking while still with my Ex. and gained just a couple of pounds. Got divorced 3 years later and stayed the same size and still not smoking. Remarried 5 years ago and gained 25 pounds and am happier now than I have ever been in my entire life!! Don't get me wrong, I would like to loose 25-30 pounds and get back into a size 8, but OH WELL, my husband loves the 'plumper' me and I can assure you we will never get divorced. So, I guess that kind of jacks up that particular study, doesn't it? =)

Correlation studies mean nothing. They don't prove that one thing makes another thing more or less likely. Read over the study again. Can you find any other factors that might cause divorce? Or maybe the high rate of divorce anyway skew the results.
Always take correlation studies with a grain of salt.

It's what's inside that counts. Some people put on weight, don't like the way they look anymore and take it out on the ones closest to them.

I think if a marriage is headed for doom, it's going to happen nine times out of ten, weight or no weight.

according to my doctor, smoking causes every thing, I asked her "if I quit smoking will my bald spot go away?" she wouldn't answer me!

there is a a big difference between a few pounds...and a lot of pounds

I really HATE when women come on here and say weight shouldn't matter-

IT DOES MATTER!!! WHO WANTS TO BE WITH A FAT PERSON????

I DON'T!

Only a small percentage of men are chubby chasers. The rest prefer slender, well put together chicks. Fact of life.
