How is Obesity Caused? Is it a disease?

environmental/behavioral? biological/genetic? culture? hormonal disorders? overeating? no exercise? energy imbalance?

disease? yes or no. why or why not?

I may offend people by saying so, but putting obesity in the same catergory (i.e disease) as cancer is frankly offensive.

Yes it kills people, but because they stuff themselves with food not because they are "ill". There is nobody holding them down saying "you must eat".

I do think that perhaps tendency to have a large appetite runs in the family, and I accept that it has been shown that problems with underlying conditions such as thryroid, prutuity gland or side effects of medications etc cause weight gain, but so does lack of exercise and over eating.

It is what i refer to as an "indulgent illness", same as drug addiction or alcoholism. Mainly self inflicted, and it costs the NHS too much money.

There's not one of you who made smart *** remarks who knows anything about over eating and over weight people
Some where in the beginning of an over weight person life somethings happens to cause them to over eat. It could be depression, a family who thinks it's ok to over stuff there children. Than there are there peers who endless beradge of insults and cruel jokes. Next are the girls that when an over weight person dares to say hi or smile at her She will do eveything anything to make him feel small and laugh at by her friends or anyone who is in ear shoot

im over weight iv lost loads now but all the women after not during child bearing put on lots of weight and i ate foods that i was never allowed when i was little my mother starved me till i eneded up in hosptial so when i could after i was taken away i ate all friut and veg i could also size places i have very large breasts and even though iv lost weight 4 stone none has been from my breasts!lol i eat 900 calories a day at the momment and only lose 3pound a week

Primarily too much desire to eat, and not enough desire to not eat and do anything else.

Perhaps also lack of shame n having ones clothes grow tight, and thinking its Ok to just buy bigger clothes, instead of controlling your weight.

No. It's caused by stuffing the face with food, and not burning enough calories. It's a gluttonous act.
