Is it possible that all the bans on smoking are adding to the rise in obesity? |
I realize that smoking isn't good for you but it does suppress hunger in people. Smoking also gives a person extra energy. I was just wondering if there might be a relationship between smoking and maintaining your weight. No doubt about it. Smokers are on average 15 pounds lighter than non-smokers. Though as you point out it isn't good for you: the health benefits from the lost weight don't equal the health risks of smoking. Still, in our weight-obsessed society, some people are going to smoke to keep their weight down. I have heard that once you stop smoking you find a new addiction and it ends up being food. It's like a comfort for smokers, so the less cigarettes you smoke the more you eat so the more weight you gain. Also, people are more likely to just smoke a cigarette for lunch and not eat anything and when they cut out cigarettes they eat more. many times the addiction just changes, from smoking to drinking, or from drinking to smoking, it can also change to food, or gambling and people who change eating habits to eat less many start drinking and some start smoking Yes, people with addictive behaviour need a vice to sustain there addiction. They stop one and start another to mentally remain comfortable within themselves. |
