Tobacco and obesity---is there a correlation?



In the early sixties the surgeon general warned of the dangers of smoking-especially cigarettes by the nineties millions had heeded the warning Now by the turn of the century obesity is a fact of life and also life threatening.Sadly it is the younger generation who suffer from these twiin evils.However they can kick the nicotine habit.Where does the obesity stop

Basically those foods most pleasing to the taste are hardest on the waist line.

Nicotine is a stimulant and as such cause activity that burns calories.

I would say your basic assumption has merit. But I think the real cause of obesity is life style. Frankly, life in American has changed from physical to mental. So we have gone from high levels of physical "exercise" in our normal jobs/lives, activity that controls obesity, to a more cerebral life style with the associated physical inactivity and mental stress. Inactivity is an obvious contributor to obesity but stress also plays a part in that it frequently leads to snacking and a search for comfort foods.

So remember, if it tastes good it is bad for you. If it is bland, flavorless, boring, unsatisfying etc. it is good for you.

I sometimes wonder if good food makes you live significantly longer or if it just seems longer.
the actual culprit for obesity, apart from nicotine, is a sedentary lifestyle. apart from cutting down/kicking the habit of smoking, one must start with some simple but brisk exercises like walking daily. these together with healthy habits like being involved in some good social cause does a world of wonders to the mind, soul and body.
I think the main cause of the obesity problem is the availability of high fat and high sugar food and drink. Mothers don't cook like they used to, its easier to order in a pizza or takeaway! Kids are programmed by the ads they see and they want, and quie often they get! They dont run around playing outside in the evening, they sit in front of a TV, games console or computer. The whole lifestyle is an invitation to gain weight! They grow up learning the wrong eating habits. And we are not much better as adults. Microwave to plate dinners, processed foods, snacks, they all add up.
I think smoking has very little to do with it to be honest.
Where does it stop? I think the person who figures that one out will be made for life :)! lol I guess starting with education of the children at school, educating parents and letting it work its way through the generations for the next 100 years or so :D
