What is obesity and diabetes? |
What is obesity and diabetes? Obesity is being overweight and diabetes is the body's inability to either produce or use insulin. Obesity is a major cause of type 2 diabetes. obesity, condition resulting from excessive storage of fat in the body. Obesity has been defined as a weight more than 20% above what is considered normal according to standard age, height, and weight tables, or by a complex formula known as the body mass index. It has been estimated that 30% to 35% of Americans are overweight or obese. read more here: http://www.reference.com/search?q=obesit... diabetes or diabetes mellitus, chronic disorder of glucose (sugar) metabolism caused by inadequate production or use of insulin, a hormone produced in specialized cells (beta cells in the islets of Langerhans) in the pancreas that allows the body to use and store glucose. It is a leading cause of death in the United States and is especially prevalent among African Americans. The treatment of diabetes was revolutionized when F. G. Banting and C. H. Best isolated insulin in 1921. read more here: http://www.reference.com/search?q=diabet... www.reference.com http://www.bigbangfilmfestival.com/... Obesity is extreme overweight. Diabetes is a disease that prevents the pancreas from producing enough insulin to metabolize the sugar in your diet. Being obese can make diabetes worse. Many obese people who lose weight can reduce or stop having to use insulin injections entirely and have good control of their blood sugar with diet alone. Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, is increased to a point where it is associated with certain health conditions or increased mortality. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia (high glucose blood sugar) and other signs, as distinct from a single disease or condition. The World Health Organization recognizes three main forms of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (occurring during pregnancy) [1], which have similar signs, symptoms, and consequences, but different causes and population distributions. Type 1 is usually due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin. Type 2 is characterized by tissue-wide insulin resistance and varies widely; it sometimes progresses to loss of beta cell function. Gestational diabetes is due to a poorly understood interaction between fetal needs and maternal metabolic controls. Types 1 and 2 are incurable chronic conditions, but have been treatable since insulin became medically available in 1921. Gestational diabetes typically resolves with delivery. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/diabetes... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/obesity... |
