Why is obesity acceptable in the US? |
I've had issues with my weight all my life. I have problems staying at a 'normal' weight. I go to doctors and they always ask if I'm anorexic (I'm not). Well, what if I was? What if I wanted to be thinner than I already happen to be? Why is it more acceptable in US culture to be fat than it is to be thin? Why am I offered medical help I don't need when my best friend (who is very obese) can't get a doctor to look at him twice over HIS weight issue? What's the deal here? Why am I villified for being too skinny even when everyone around me knows I'm trying to gain weight while G (my friend) isn't once told by a doctor to get healthy and lose the flab? The problem with obesity is not that in US we are not concerned for your health and welfare. Generally, some doctors assume that those who exceed a core weight are aware of this. Most people know when they are over weight. They can feel it, they see it. It does seem odd, however those who are too skinny, usually have a deformed perception of it. Meaning they see themselves as fat, when they really are not. It's ok to be a little to skinny or even a little to fat. It makes us who we are. It's when health issues involve themselves that make it more of a concern for doctors. So although no one has told your friend.....Trust me.... she knows.... It is never acceptable to be obese in any society. It is ugly and unhealthy. majority rule? macdonalds rule? I was getting told by my doctor everytime I went that I needed to lose weight.. I'm 5'4" at that time i weighed around 170-180 I now weigh about 150 but my lowest was 138.. I don't think anyone villifies you they just envy you.. And I deffinately think that obesity has become all to common in this country. Your obese friend needs a new doctor. Obesity causes so many health problems but so can being too thin. The U.S. doesn't accept obesity. People are more sedentary and have access to fast and fattening food. Because they have become a nation controlled by the media and corrupt corporations, the United States is the only place in the world that adds dangerous chemicals, synthetic additives and hormones in their foods and sells cancer causing RX drugs like candy..its no wonder. I don't know of any doctor who won't tell an obese person that they need to lose weight. Your friend is seeing some unusually complacent doctors perhaps. I doubt you are "villified" for being too skinny, or you don't know the meaning of that word. It sounds like people, and more than one person, are concerned that you may experience medical problems due to severe underweight. Take care of your own medical issues and let your friend take care of his. It's no use comparing and wrestling over whose eating disorder is more polically correct. |
