Are we more concerned about anorexia than obesity because? |
rich, pretty little white girls get those diseases? Obesity is 100,000 times more serious a health issue in America. OOh you raise an excellent point there. Obesity is treated pretty seriously but mainstream America gives anorexics special attention and sympathy. Obese people are usually just made fun of. *cough* I'm no rich, pretty little girl. Thanks for the steriotype. I have been both of those, obese and anorexic. I acually have seen much more concern when I was obese. There aren't any ads on cartoon network about MAKE SURE YOU EAT SO YOU DON'T DIE!!! The ads on cartoon network are telling kids to read nutriton facts and get active. Not to mention schools are getting helthier lunches, but the anorexic girls aren't being forced to eat. Only the eating disorders in the media are really cared about. In real people, obesity is considered bigger. America in general is more concerned about obesity because more people have it. But the media talks alot about the movie stars having anorexia because it is just drama to talk about.... Not all "pretty white girls" get anorexia, you need to re word your question because it doesnt make you sound too good........ But yea. America is more concerned about the obesity epidemic if that is what you are asking? Obesity can be a serious health issue - long term. Anorexia, however, affects a person more immediately. Electrolyte imbalances alone (a side effect of malnutrition) could kill a person with anorexia very quickly. I don't know why "white" girls are the only ones anorexic. Obesity statistics are based on BMI which is a very flawed system. Do you know the only reason 30% of people are considered obese is because they raised the upper BMI threshold by 3 points and suddenly the percentage of obese people went from 20% to 30% literally overnight. I'm not saying there isn't an issue with obesity, I'm saying that there is an exaggeration of how bad the obesity crisis is and disorders like Anorexia are being downplayed because of this. They should measure body fat percentage and scrap BMI. You'd be surprised just how many people are being misclassified by a very flawed system. |
