What is consequence of obesity? How well do diet modifications work? |
we are carrying out a study and would like to know the experience of other researchers in this field. To get a little more specific, first you must understand how obesity is measured. BMI or body mass index is commonly emplyoed. You can get you own BMI here: http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/. Once you get the BMI, you must understands what it means. In general 18-25 is normal, 25-30 is "overweight" 30-40 is "obese" and above 40 is "severely obese." These are just definitions that dont't mean anything in themselves, but serve as useful communication devices when talking about being overweight. What is useful about the BMI measurements is that it allowed us to calculate risk of being over obese. The previous post correctly lists many conditions obesity creates. You are asking about "consequences" and I think it may be useful to gather all of those conditions and distill them to what matters most in medicine, namely mortality. So the question is do people who are obese have increased mortality? The answer was addressed by a major study that followed over a million (a milion!) people for 14 years. The study then compared the BMIs of all those people and assessed whether people with higher BMIs had increased mortality. It turned out that people with BMI of about 30 had 1.5 times higher chance of dying than people with BMI in the normal range. BMI of 35 conferred 2 times the risk of dying, etc. The contributing reason for increased mortality, by the way, was not only cardiovascular disease, but cancer as well. This study was published in 1999 in New England Journal of Medicine and to this day is considered as the most compelling evidence for obesity having detrimental effects to your health. So what do you do about it. No magic here -- smart, **consistent diet** and an active lifestyle. These do work for sure. Also controlling other coexistent conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol. Hope that helps! heart attack, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, damage to weight bareing jins. they work well if couples with excerise and healthy lifestyle |
