What do you think of Obesity in America?

Do you think Obesity is measured correctly in America? I personally disagree with the BMI calculation and think it warps what defines obesity. If for example, you're a 230 Ib. 6'1 male who can hardly pinch fat because of muscle, you're still defines according to BMI as overweight! Who thought up this crap? And as I asked before, what do you think about the subject in general?

You are correct about the BMI. I don't understand why it's become so important. It doesn't differentiate between men and women, for one thing. And it doesn't take into account body fat percentage. There is talk that the BMI is going to be supplemented with waist information--that if your BMI is a certain number AND your waist is above a certain number, then you're fat.
I think it's because the BMI is easy to figure out while body fat percentage is difficult.
However, I don't think vast numbers of "overweight" Americans (via BMI numbers) are actually bodybuilders who are skewing the results. Take a walk in the mall and look at all the fat. Source(s): My weight loss and exercise blog:

i really dnt like it. im from England an i fort here woz bad enuf!
It is definitely an epidemic. Our culture is based on the here and now. If it tastes good- eat it-who cares if it's bad for you; there is probably a pill to fix it. We are lazy... walk to the store, nah...I'll drive. And my favorite, well, I am only 100 pounds away from qualifying to get gastric by-pass surgery, so I'll keep eating!
Hold on let me ask a fat guy. Hey Grimmybear what do you think?

He agrees with you.
I think Obesity is a serious problem here in the states, in which we can blame alot of on the fast food industry... I know the problem wasn't as big 50 years ago... i notice that we americans eat alot in great quantities, and instead of taking the stairs we'll take the elevators...

as for the BMI, i agree that it may be slightly off when it comes to people that have a lot of muscle, but my argument is that those people don't have to care if they're considered "overweight" because in all actuality they're in great shape, and don't have any fat at all...
That's a rather heavy question...
