I'm canadian and i've noticed a slight obesity problem here in canada. is it worse in america or the same? |
every time i watch the news i hear about the growing obesity problem. what sort of programs are instilled to help the incline of obesity I would think the Canadians probably look like scarecrows when standing beside Americans !! It's Fat City here..... everyone loves the fast food drive thru window and they all order the super-size meal. In America, the alarm bell has been sounded, but no one seems to be listening. its worse in america, WAY worse Epidemic proportions. No pun intended. Causes are likely too much TV, too much computer time... and not enough exercise and too much food. US is worse, but Canada is starting to catch up. There are some programs to drop trans fats in restaurants, and places like McDonalds are offering alternatives to fries, but there is a very long way to go before things improve, if that is even possible. Have never seen a picture of a fat RCMP officer and our telly programmes include a lot of chubby Yank cops which culturally attest to which country has cornered the market on cellulite and its capitol is not Ottawa. Programs in the US which help the incline of obesity start with the all too often repeated, "D'ya want fries with that?" As for the decline of obesity here and in Welland, CAnada (I've a friend there and one in Quebec) most of the advertised gyms and diets are just carnival attractions to separate the mark from his money. I gained 50 pounds due to prescription medicines and recent visit to doctor notes I have lost 20 of those because I switched to a diet endorsed by the American Diabetic Association. Smaller portions, monitored carb intake and a willingness to include more meat and vegetables than beans and pasta per meal have worked wonders sans the feeling I am "sacrificing." Am continuing to lose the fat steadily, and rather than give my paycheck to a gym, I bought a "Cardio-Glide" for $15 at a second-hand shoppe at the time most Americans are breaking their New Year's Resolutions. Got a great set of graduated weight barbells from one of those sports equipment warehouses and have my routines for "tone ups," rather than weight loss. To Hades with the dietary gurus whom shout "discipline" when moderation in diet is the realistic approach. I no longer drink Coke by the gallon, but use Propel by Gatorade as a soft drink, beer is out, but a daily ounce or two of Canadian Mist or Jim Beam straight up is not a bad thing. Diabetes is a most reasonable disease as far as control is concerned. My nephew is a type2 (adult onset) as is my uncle. Nephew no longer needs insulin shots as he has control. Considerably older uncle does take the shots because he did not follow or did not get the diet info in time. |
