There are many causes for obesity, and chemicals haven`t been proven cause obesity per se, unless you figure that they raise blood sugar levels and make people more hungry (for example, aspartame, although it has no calories can make a person crave sweets or cause them to feel hungry and eat more).

Transfats (hydrogentated oils), on the other hand are very dangerous and can contribute to problems ralated to obesity. For example, clogged arteries, heart attack, diabetes, etc. Much of processed, fat laden food is made with transfats.
Dr. Atkins book
Absence of Oxaloacetic acid, a catalyst in energy (Krebs) cycle is deficient in fat people. This chemical is to be introduced in the body by food only of specific type.
