Just how much of a genetic factor is there in obesity?

All of my family is pretty skinny, in fact, I've had a six pack since I was like 10 lol, I don't have to do anything. The person I'm dating however, she is a bit on the chubby side, which doesn't bother me, as long as it is healthy, her parents are pretty gigantic, both mom and dad, and even her sister is quite a bit bigger than she is. Is this what she is going to be like in 20 years? I'm 20 she's 18.

Obesity comes from lifestyle and inactivity. Genetics play a role to a certain degree where metabolism is concerned, but I've never seen a case where this could not be overcome through changes in diet and activity levels. Anyone who uses genetics as a reason for not being able to lose weight isn't willing to do what it takes. Yes, they may have to work at it a little harder than the person who seems like they can eat anything and not gain, but it can be done.

The thing is, the bad habits of parents often rubs off onto the children. Parents who are obese more often have kids who are obese because of this.
There is a genetic component, however....the major cause is the environment. Our genetic profiles have not changed enough to cause the obesity epidemic.
It's not genetic in my opinion but a shared lifestyle that causes obesity. If she is used to large portions, overeating, and little activity then she will probably get larger.
well it all depends on the lifestyle
however if there is some kind
of diabetes running through the family
then there is a chance that one could
end up having it
unless that person changes their lifestyle
For some a lot. For other none at all.
