I have a pug with very bad eye allergy and I wanted to know If I could give him over the counter medicine? |
He has discharge from his eyes and they are a little red but When i clean his eyes he seems fine. I am taking to the vet on Monday but i wanted to know if there was something eles I could do for him at home. Benadryl. 1mg per pound not to exceed 50 mg per dose on dog or humans!! Use a regular person eye cleaner twice a day to remove irritants. Do not use anything medicated w/o first talking to the vet. no, not unless the vet prescribes it. It could be infected, he could have a scratch on the cornea. Self medicating with otc stuff could make it much worse for him. Call the vet and get their suggestions on what you can do until Monday to make him comfortable. veterinary assistant Go to the pharmacy and get Genteal (brand) artificial tears and put two drops in both eyes every four hours. Keep whipping the discharge away as well. This will moisturize the eyes and make him more comfortable until you can go to the vet. Do not use visine. Your dog probably has conjunctivitis (eye infection) and/or dry eye, which are very common in pugs (their eyes pop out more than other breeds, which predisposes them to drying and infection) Thank you for making an appointment with your vet. Call you vet and ask him, he will let you know...also, you should see a vet first, you really don't know what is going on with his eyes...could be nothing but could be a big infection and he will need special drops for the eyes. Not human grade drops. Good luck :) Why are you waiting until Monday, could get alot worse by then. Call your vet! Don't put anything in your dog's eyes. Cleaning is fine with a moist(warm water) cloth and gently. |
