How to Maintain Oral Health for Your Dog?

How to Maintain Oral Health for Your Dog?

Most people ignore oral care for their dogs. Maintaining oral health is of primary importance to your dog's overall health and wellness. Be proactive to reduce the possibility of periodontal disease and its complications. Maintenance will take 10 minutes twice a week.
Instructions

* STEP 1: Evidence shows that brushing your dog's teeth is the best way to remove plaque and any accumulation of calculus, which, untreated, can lead to periodontal disease and other health complications. Brush your dog's teeth at least once a week.
* STEP 2: Begin brushing when your dog is a puppy. Habituate him to a toothbrush as early as possible.
* STEP 3: Ask your vet to recommend dog dental care products. I have had great success with Petrodex Poultry Flavor and Beef Flavor Toothpaste. Dogs love these!
* STEP 4: Check your dog's mouth on a regular basis. You will be more likely to find problems before they get serious enough to cause lasting damage. Ask your Vet what to look for specifically in your own dog's mouth.
* STEP 5: Older dogs or abused dogs who have never experienced having their teeth brushed may resist. Be calm, assertive and be the leader of your pack. Your own confident attitude will help your pet relax. Introduce the toothpaste and the toothbrush slowly and hold your dog's mouth so he cannot bite you. Do not brush the teeth of a dog you don't know! If you experience difficulty, ask your vet for advice about how to proceed.
* STEP 6: If your dog resists so much that you can't proceed, consult a professional trainer and/or have his teeth professionally cleaned at the vet's office, where they usually give the dog anesthesia.

Tips & Warnings

* Many people want to solve their dogs' oral health issues by giving them dog mints, bones, dental-chews, treats or chew toys. This is insufficient. You can give your dog all the dental toys you like, but you also need to brush his teeth on a regular basis.
u have to brush his teeth with special dog toothpaste...the first day he will not like it so brush just for few seconds and than give him a cookie or something as a reward. The next day brush a little longer...after some time he will get used to it..
only feed them dry food and milkbones
brushing his teeth daily with special dog tooth paste wouldn't hurt but i don't think it's necessary. but do it once a week and give your dog plenty of chewing toys and raw hides, some are made to keep the dog's teeth healthy. also feed him dry dog food, here also, see if there is the kind that is specially formulated for healthy teeth....
Feed dry food, brush teeth once a week, carrots are good treats for the teeth not rawhide. If they swallow it in big chucks it doesn't digest and could get stuck in the intestines
you can get chicken tooth paste or dental chews!
At stores like pets mart and petco they sell treats called greenies he/she will love it they also keep your dogs teeth clean and healthy if your dog is very tiny get the super small greenies if your dog is small but not to small get the small ones small would be like the size of a Maltese. if your dog is medium get the medium greenies and if your dog is large get the large greenies the paper in the package will tell you how many greenies should be fed to your dog.
