Can Osteoarthritis be genetic?

I am in my early 40's, and have been recently diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, complete with bone spurs, narowing of the vertibrae, and denegenerative disc disease. Could this be the result of genes passed down from my mother? (She had horrible arthritis.) Does this mean my son will get it too? I live in blinding pain, and hope to have corrective surgery soon. What is the re-occurance rate? I am taking Tramadol, and Skelaxin to just be able to walk upright. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, and seeking serious answers PLEASE!
Hugs& Peace

Battlerattle06, I really feel for you. I know how bad your pain is because I have the same thing. People can't understand how bad the pain is unless you have this. My doctors have said that osteoarthritis is genetic. I have 4 siblings and I'm the only one with it. I have had a fusion in my neck c5/6 and they also removed a huge bone spur from the top of my spine. The pain stopped after the surgery for a few years. That was 7 years ago, now I'm in pain pretty bad. I take 60 mg.'s of Avinza daily and it helps alot. I go to a pain management specialist and a Rheumatologist. I spent years trying to get help and now I am told I also have Psoriatic Arthritis. I have recently had cortisone injections in my neck and lower back. That might help you alot because it has helped me. Good luck to you and hang in there.
Osteo usually refers to arthritis occurred buy injury rheumatoid is genetic.
Id say its genetic to the human race. Almost everyone will develop osteoarthritis in their lifetime. I'm an orthopedic nurse and I don't find many over the age of 40 that don't have it including myself. Are you sure its osteo. and not rheumatoid arthritis?
It can be in your DNA from your mother/father. Generations way back. Of course it can be genetic.
Do whatever you can to live as normal a life as possible. You only get one chance. Give it your best try.
Even if you have to get another opinion.
There are many sites on line where you can find information. Just look up genetics.com.
Recently I came across, through Internet a drug of name AMAZING ARTHRITIS RELIEF, which has given A very positive result in USA.I hope this information can bring you much relief.
I am in my late 30's and also have osteo arthritis, but only stiffness, not blinding pain (yet). I have bone growths all over my spine similar to yours but probably not as advanced. I was told by a doctor that there is some specutalation that diet can contribute to those genetically prone to this disorder. Specifically, a diet high in protein and / or calcium (mine was very high in both; and never organic foods, either). Interestingly, high protein diets are helpful to people with Multiple Schlerosis such as Montel Williams. Anyway, most of my protein sources throughout life were milk and dairy, lots of chocolate milk, ice cream, cheese, etc, along with all the other typical junk food, although due to a high metabolism, I never became obese from my high food consumption, just 20 pounds overweight. I now try to eat organic, limit sugar, and dairy, take calcium pills instead, and still eat protein though. Just try to limit my calorie intake. Some people think a limited calorie diet will extend your life and help with alot of health problems, I am still experimenting with that.... hard for a food lover like me. I DO feel better when I don't overeat, and avoid dairy and junk food. Also, I avoid any and all artificial sweeteners like the plague, they give me headaches and make me more stiff and achy all over. Hope this helps. Glucosamine and Chodrotin/ MSM supplements also helped, but only after 3 months... for the first few weeks, they actually make me worse. God Bless, Pam in Houston, Texas
A baby is a photo copy of its' parents. Genes do this photography, i believe and it is experienced so by everybody. Not only OA but many diseases are hereditory.
