Does light laser therapy help with osteoarthritis in the knees? |
Does light laser therapy help with osteoarthritis in the knees? edit: Beckerton12 is wrong. Cold Laser or Low Level Laser Therapy was approved by the FDA just a few years ago for the treatmeant of carpal tunnel syndrome. I am no scientist, so I cannot explain to you in scientific terms why laser therapy works, but it basically speeds the healing of tissues. Also if there is scar tissue present, the cold lasers will provide an environment for the tissue to heal itself. Low Level Laser Therapy or Cold Laser Therapy will reduce pain, swelling, and even excess fluid produced by the joint. LLLT or CLT increases the joint mobility. The risks are minimal, and this procedure is non-invasive, pain free, and usually quick (15-30 minutes per treatment). If you have the opportunity to try this treatment, I believe after your doctor okays it, you should go for it. Some insurance companies even cover the procedure, so if yours does, you have nothing to lose for trying, except your joint pain. A lot of information below: Almost all of the information I have ever seen about cold laser therapy has confirmed the following statement: Advantageous actions of low level laser therapy take place in all organs and tissues of the body for the creation of good cellular functioning once again. Listing their antipathological and prophysiological internal and external benefits would have me producing a very long series of human conditions and treatment results鈥攎aybe several hundred. I will furnish a mere handful here. They include: 鈥?A reduction of pain by the body鈥檚 production of endorphins; 鈥?The diminishing of inflammation from suppression of tissue excitation; 鈥?The stopping of a tissue鈥檚 influx of fluids; 鈥?The disappearance of swelling, redness, and heat; 鈥?The elimination of pain; 鈥?The elevation of lymphatic drainage; 鈥?The increase of blood circulation; 鈥?The flow of healing enzymes into a traumatized area; 鈥?The measureable showing of up to 75 percent increase in enzymes; 鈥?The spasm release of tight muscles (both smooth and striated) which had been creating chronic pain, joint stiffness, and decreased mobility; 鈥?The speeding up of bone repair from the stimulation offered by fibroblastic and osteoblastic proliferation; 鈥?The canceling wave effect of viruses, fungi, bacteria, and a variety of parasites so that they fail to survive as pathological organisms. I do not mean to be lazy by pasting this info directly, but I cannot say it all better myself. This info was taken from the following website, please check out this link. http://www.healinglightassociates.com/do... CONTRAINDICATIONS Because hard evidence has yet to be obtained, these contraindications are based more on general caution 鈥?both medical and legal) than they are based on proof: 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment of the open eye 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment over the fetus 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment over the thyroid gland 鈥⑩€俆reatment on persons with active cancers 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment of hemorrhage (uncontrolled bleeding) PRECAUTIONS These situations are best dealt with in conjunction with a qualified health professional familiar with low level laser therapy: 鈥⑩€侾eople with darkly pigmented skin 鈥⑩€侾hotosensitive people (skin highly sensitive to light or sunlight) 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment of infected skin or wounds 鈥⑩€侱irect treatment of the brachial plexus, sympathetic ganglia, and vagus nerve in people with heart disease 鈥⑩€侾eople with epilepsy or who are prone to seizures NO SPECIAL CONTRAINDICATIONS OR PRECAUTIONS NEEDED 鈥⑩€侾acemakers 鈥⑩€侰hildren (precautions and contraindications listed above apply) I also included these links which provide some information. http://americare4health.com/collasther.h... http://www.laserpainclinics.com/conditio... not yet. i have it severely and not much can be done. we just talked about this in class today... it's not FDA approved as a treatment, it just doesn't do any harm. The laser used does not even penetrate the skin, it only goes like 2 or 3 mm in. If you think it works and feel improvement then why not use it, but its not proven. school |
