Can I ride a bike if I have osteoarthritis? |
I have osteoarethritis in my knees. I know swimming is the best option for exercise, but I don't know how to swim. Plus, I don't have time to swim and wash my hair every time between school and work. Can I use exercise bikes instead of the stairmaster I usually did for exercise or will it injure my knees even more? Yes you can use a bike. Be sure you are taking glucosamine though to help rebuild the lost cartiledge in you knees. it's up to you. cycling is a low impact execise (as long as it's not downhill mountain biking), if it's working, go for it. I have osteoarethritis DDD DJD and on and on with osteoarethritis it is best to push through the pain. It gets worse if you baby it. The joints its worse in with me are the ones I dont use much Biking is way better for you than the stair master. It is a low impact activity and might help you feel better. Swimming is great too. You can also rollerblade. Rollerblading is low impact as well. Walking would even be better than the stairmaster. I have had 13 knee surgeries. This would be a good alternative to swimming. Generally speaking, different types of exercise are on a continium of how much impact they induce. At the very low end of impact is swimming...at the highest end would be running. Bike riding is an activity that falls somewhere near swimming. However, be advised that some people who have very advanced OA cannot make a full revolution on a bicycle. It might take some stretching before you can go all the way around, or before you can take any resistance. What about water aerobics? You do not necessarily need to know how to "swim," but do need to be comfortable standing in at least waist deep water. physical therapist |
