Should I have surgery for knee osteoarthritis?

I am only 26 and I have early stage osteoarthritis in my knee. My MRI did not show any meniscal tears. I took physical therapy for 8 weeks and it seemed to help but now it's getting worse. My knee constantly pops when I walk and I can't exercise much. My surgeon wants to "scope" my knee and "pick" the bone but from what I've read online arthroscopic surgery doesn't have good reviews. Has anyone had experience with it? If so what was your experience and what was the recovery like?

I would try to opt for a repeat MRI or arthrogram...there is a certain percentage of meniscal tears that will not show up on MRI (ie, false negative). A repeat may pick it up.

If still negative, I would seek out other conservative treatments such as cortisone or synvisc injections.

If all else failed, yes, it may be worth it to have a better look inside...arthroscopy is a relatively simple procedure to recover from, (about 4-6 weeks of PT) and most are off their crutches in 3-7 days. That is, provided, there was no MAJOR damage found. Source(s): I am a PT
Arthroscopic surgery done properly by a good orthopedic surgeon should be able to help you with your problems. You have to be very careful in choosing your doctor.
