What is osteopathic medicine and is it covered under most HMOs?

Osteopathic medicine is a more holistic approach to medicine. Osteopathic physicians are able to treat general medical conditions, but often have a good backround in the musculoskeletal system and spinal care...often times much more so than a general MD practicioner. Some do still perform spinal manipulations. I suppose you can think of them as a chiropractor with a medical degree.

They are held to the same standards as MDs and must pass board exams to practice.

There is usually no difficulty with medical coverage as long as the DO participates in the plan...our facility has several under our BC/BS HMO plan.

It is the branch of medicine which manipulates the bonesto restore structural and functional balance to the body. It is a recognized branch of medicine, so it may be covered by your HMO plan. You have to ask your carrier, if it is.
