Can a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) be a surgeon?

Those with DO degrees have become part of many fields of medicine, however are they becoming surgeons or is that still restricted to MDs ?

Thanks

According to the American Osteopathic Association, DO's and MD's are the only fully qualified physicians to perform surgery and prescribe medication in the USA. DO's in the U.S. are comparable to MD's, they just get more credit hours in anatomy, muscle skeletal medicine and Osteopathic Manipulation.

Yes indeed
I worked in NYC hospital where the entire surgical department was run by DOs: vascular , plastics, general surgery trauma. They have the same training as MDs. It may depend on the state/province though

According to the BIOMEA, in most countries outside the United States, D.O. stands for 鈥渄iploma of osteopathy,鈥?not 鈥渄octor of osteopathic medicine.鈥?The difference is that osteopaths are not trained or licensed as physicians, and therefore do not carry the same practice rights, such as surgery and prescribing medication. However, osteopaths in some countries do act as primary care providers, coordinating treatment with fully licensed primary care physicians.

In the United States, its country of origin, OMM is used by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) along with surgery and medication in treatment of patients. Outside the United States, practitioners of osteopathy (who may have the qualification of D.O. as a Diploma of Osteopathy, but do not necessarily have the same medical training as American-trained D.O.s) generally limit their scope to manual manipulation.

Basically, some can & some cannot. Depends on where they got their degree.

Yes, In the United States, the D.O. and the M.D. are the only two degrees permitting licensure as medical physicians. D.O and M.D. physicians have similar training (both requiring 4 years of training in the basic and clinical sciences and licensing exams) but osteopathic physicians receive additional training in Osteopathic Manual Manipulation.
