What is Osteopathic Medicine?

First thing that you should know is the defination of osteopathy. Osteopathy a system of medicine based on the theory that disturbances in the musculoskeletal system affect other bodily parts, causing many disorders that can be corrected by various manipulative techniques in conjunction with conventional medical, surgical, pharmacological, and other therapeutic procedures.

Osteopathic medicine is a distinctive form of medical practice in the United States. Osteopathic medicine provides all of the benefits of modern medicine including prescription drugs, surgery, and the use of technology to diagnose disease and evaluate injury. It also offers the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine. Osteopathic Medicine emphasizes helping each person achieve a high level of wellness by focusing on health education, injury prevention and disease prevention.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or D.O.s, are trained to apply the philosophy of treating the whole person (a holistic approach) to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury using conventional medical practice such as drugs and surgery, along with manual therapy (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or OMM). Osteopathic Medicine is the field of medicine practiced by DO's (Doctor of Osteopathy). It originally started as a study of the the misalignment of bones (hence the Osteo) as a cause of Disease (hence the Pathic). It is described as opposed to "Allopathic Medicine" which attributes disease to forces outside or foreign (hence the Allo) to the body. Regular MD's are also called Allopaths.
In general, Osteopaths have dropped most of the theories that attributed ALL disease to misalignment of the bones but still can do the manipulations of bones and joint for some conditions. In general, both types of doctors are very similar.
