What is the difference between osteopathic and allopathic medicine?

What is the difference between osteopathic and allopathic medicine?

Osteopaths are D.O.s They are licensed to practice medicine, prescribe medications, perform surgery and many go on to specialize in all fields: anesthesiology, surgery, neurology, etc. They are also trained in manipulation and often incorporated this into their practice (where applicable). They have to pass the boards, they have all the same curriculum of medical sciences. Allopathic medicine recognizes the appropriateness of manipulations under certain conditions. Please do not confuse osteopaths with chiropractors. Very different.
I thought osteopaths primarily used manipulative techniques on bones. I understand that in the USA, osteopaths having a doctorate degree (DO) prescribe medicine but I am unfamiliar with this and have always thought that they prescribe the same sorts of medicines that practitioners of allopathic medicine (ie Doctors with MD degrees) prescribe.

I believe it is the Homeopaths and the Naturopaths who prescribe medications far different from the usual allopathic medicines.
Essentially, osteopaths get the same training as allopaths in addition to the manipulation training they receive as a D.O. The can prescribe medicines and go into the same specialties. Many osteopathic doctors graduating these days will also sit for the board exam to become an M.D.
