Why do you have loss of height when you have osteoporosis?

what cause compression fractures of the spine?

Hi Jenna.

First of all, we lose height from osteoporosis because the spine starts to press down. The space between the vertebrae becomes smaller, thereby making us shorter.

Compression fractures are caused by the vertebrae being compressed against each other. When we have osteoporosis, our bone density is less, making the bones weaker & easier to break. The body's own weight will force the spine to push down, compressing the vertebrae. Then, since the bone is thinner & weaker, the vertebrae start to fracture 鈥?compression fractures.

This is why it is so important for women to have plenty of calcium & vitamin D during their lives, especially after they reach menopause.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

weak bone density and bone construction. the bones compact and shrinkage occurs.
