Osteoporosis at 46.....?

Does anyone know why/ how a 46 y/o healthy female can delvelop osteoporosis at 46. Dr. says its mainly in my spine and he says I have the bones of a 70 yr. old. I had part of my stomach removed 12 yrs. ago and I am wondering if this is related to that. I am suppose to take foltrin (a intrinsic factor/ iron supplement) but, alas.... I haven't. Any thoughts

Yes, very much likely is related to your stomach surgery, but also there are other factors to consider.

1. Osteoporosis is found to run in families. Look at your older female relatives, do they or did they have it?
2. My Mom had it because she constantly dieted and did not drink milk or eat milk products because "it makes me fat". Were you one of those women?
3. How much time and effort have you put into being physically fit? Exercise and good muscle development promotes thicker stronger bones.

But don't despair. Science has made huge strides for people with this disease. Make some changes to your lifestyle, at least as you are able to at this point, take your prescripts I am sure the doc as prescribed you, and know that many women are not only stopping the progression of this disease but are actually REVERSING it! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask your doc about this, and you know, you may want to mention to him/her that telling you that you have the bones of a 70 year old is not helping you keep your positive attitude up, which is what is needed right now to get you going in the right direction............................
