Is it normal to have hair fall out? Also, can you get osteoporosis from not drinking enough milk?

Is it normal to have hair fall out? Like in the shower, when you brush your hair, etc? Just in small amounts, 20-30 strands or so?

If it isn't, what could cause it? Too long of hair (mine is very fine, normal thickness, and layered, but the longest layers come down to my hips)? Just hormonal changes in a teen's body?

My mum says it's because I don't eat enough meat. (I became a pescetarian [like a lacto-ovo vegetarian, but I also eat fish and seafood] last August.....no real reason behind it, just had some....erm.....really bad experiences with meat = /.) Is this true?

She also says I have to be careful, because of my small bone structure, that I'm more likely to get osteoporosis when I get older if I don't drink enough milk, which I try to drink enough of, but I don't really like the taste. I tried to tell her that drinking enough milk has little to do with osteoporosis, that it's really the combination with exercise that prevents it. Am I right in this?

Both my grandfathers have gorgeous thick hair (one's Austrian, the other's Filipino); My maternal grnadmother has the same hair as she did twenty years ago, same very fine, medium thickness (she's Welsh and British); My paternal grandmother is a bit on the balding side (Filipino/Spanish), but apparently her hair was incredible thick when she was young.

I didn't say that it was ONLY excercise that prevented osteoporosis, I said that it, COMBINED with calcium, and proper nutrition, that prevented osteoporosis.

And as far as I know, only one of my aunt's has a thyroid problem. It's severe, but I don't think she counts in this, as she's adopted.

Some hair loss is normal, people shed several hairs a day, do you have thyroid problems in the family? Sometimes that can cause hair loss.

Strenght training is great at fighting osteoporosis. Especially when you do it for the upper body. Milk isn't the only place to get calcium.. Eggs have calcium, and other stuff like OJ with the added calcium and vit D. Potassium, and magnesium are all good for bones. Yes, it's good to drink milk but if you drink the OJ with stuff added and eat other calcium rich foods, you'll be fine

it could be many things
from hormones to thyroid or not eating right
talk it over with your mom and doctor

i have very long hair also, and mine is really falling out bad too, i notice that my part in my hair is getting wider and i do eat healthy, so I'm going to look back on this and see what others may think would cause this.

Don't know about item #1, honey (What's your family history)?
You can get calcium from a number of dairy products, even some vegetables, but you';d have to look it up. All the exercise in the world won;t replace calcium in your bones, sorry, dear.

First off it is normal to lose small amount of hair daily its just dead cells and they are being replaced by more dead cells. In some cases it can be related to hormones but that is usually your thyroid and you would lose bigger amounts then what your are saying. There are lots of ways to get enough calcium other then milk, such as lots of green leafy veggies, cheese, yogurt etc. if this is a concern then a calcium, magnesium supplement is a good alternative as well. As for drinking milk and osteoporosis well it is due to a lack of calcium but it can be cause by lots of other things as well, thyroid, parathyroid etc. and I don't think that it is worse for some body types then others.
