Osteoporosis in the hips?

My Dad has just been told he has osteoporosis in both his hips, one more than the other. He has been told there's nothing that can be done. He's very active and wants to continue to play sports so he is going to look into alternative medicines. Does anyone have any recommendations? Can anyone tell me how long it will take to deteriate? I am worried about him. Thanks.

Sure it is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture is disrupted, and the amount and variety of non-collagenous proteins in bone is altered. Osteoporosis can be prevented with lifestyle advice and sometimes medication, and in people with osteoporosis treatment may involve lifestyle advice, preventing falls and medication (calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates and several others).
Perhaps you mean Osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis (OA, also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease), is a clinical syndrome in which low-grade inflammation results in pain in the joints, caused by abnormal wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints and destruction or decrease of synovial fluid that lubricates those joints. As the bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, the patient experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Due to decreased movement because of the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax. OA is the most common form of arthritis. A molecule derived from glucosamine is used by the body to make some of the components of cartilage and synovial fluid. Supplemental glucosamine may improve symptoms of OA and delay its progression Along with glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate has become a widely used dietary supplement for treatment of osteoarthritis.
Best of Luck

Some Osteoporosis actually lasts a lifetime, exercise can do good for him, but it can be extremely painful. Take the highest dose of medication the doctor can recommended, gentle exercises like Yoga will do him good.
