How does the cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol cause of osteoporosis?

How does the cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol cause of osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a progressive metabolic bone disease that decreases bone density (bone mass per unit volume), with deterioration of bone structure. Skeletal weakness leads to fractures with minor or inapparent trauma, particularly in the thoracic and lumbar spine, wrist, and hip. Acute or chronic back pain is common. Diagnosis is by dual-energy x鈥憆ay absorptiometry. Prevention and treatment involve Ca and vitamin D supplements, exercises to maximize bone and muscle strength and minimize the risk of falls, and drug therapy to preserve bone mass or stimulate new bone formation.
* Excess alcohol - small amounts of alcohol do not increase osteoporosis risk and may even be beneficial, but chronic heavy drinking (Alcohol intake greater than 2 units/day), especially at a younger age, increases risk significantly.
* Tobacco smoking - tobacco smoking inhibits the activity of osteoblasts, and is an independent risk factor for osteoporosis. Smoking (in the case of women) also results in increased breakdown of exogenous estrogen, lower body weight and earlier menopause, all of which contribute to lower bone mineral density
* Soft drinks - some studies indicate that soft drinks (many of which contain phosphoric acid) may increase risk of osteoporosis; Others suggest soft drinks may displace calcium-containing drinks from the diet rather than directly causing osteoporosis. (Wikipedia)
Cigarette smoking and excessive caffeine or alcohol use also adversely affect bone mass. Whites and Asians are at higher risk. A family history of osteoporosis also increases risk. (Merck)

Excess alcohol - small amounts of alcohol do not increase osteoporosis risk and may even be beneficial, but chronic heavy drinking(Alcohol intake greater than 2 units/day), especially at a younger age, increases risk significantly.
Alcohol lowers the calcium supply and the efficient use of calcium by the body.

Smoking can increase chances for getting osteoporosis in a few ways鈥攖he chemicals make it harder for the body to use calcium, plus they make it harder for estrogen to do one of its jobs and protect the bones.

tobacco smoking inhibits the activity of osteoblasts, and is an independent risk factor for osteoporosis.Smoking also results in increased breakdown of exogenous estrogen, lower body weight and earlier menopause, all of which contribute to lower bone mineral density.

Both cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol contribute to or compound osteoporosis. Alcohol consumption interferes with the absorption of Vitamin D and calcium and also contributes to falls that can break bones. Regular alcohol consumption also interferes with the functioning of your osteoblasts, a type of cell essential to the body's continual bone rebuilding process.

The scientific reasons why smoking contributes to osteoporosis is less clear but you can read the various opinions in this scientific article.

well i had pretty hardcore surgery not too long ago on my hand. the doctor said i had to quit smoking because something in the cigarettes prevented bone growth, and i had to get screws and a bone graft in my hand so you can see how that would be bad. if it prevents bone growth and cancer and what have you who knows what other effects it has. so i believe it could be a reason for osteoporosis. not sure about the alcohol thing though although i would believe it if it was a cause.

Sure.
It's cigarette and drinking the cause?
Not lack of vitamin D?
Lack of consuming of milk?
Lack of sunshine too.
Without cooling system.
Could not even stand the sunlight.
Did'nt anyone learn health science?
On personal hygiene and health?
In school?
Look in the real world.
How the young one were having more fizzy drinks than milk.
Even before they learn how to walk.
Were having pop drinks in their bottle with coke instead of milk.
What happen mum?

What do you think?

As much as I know, smoking and drinking alcohol are not the main cause of osteoporosis but they do aggravate and hinder bone development......
