Is osteoporosis the same as bone degeneration? yes Source(s): life Yes because 'Osteo" means bones. Osteo arthiritis and Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is where bone density is reduced below a certain number, caused by a variety of reasons. This increases the risk for fractures. Osteo-arthritis is a joint disease where the cartilage at the joint is worn out (by age, trauma, etc) causing the bones to grind together at the joint causing pain, and bony deformation at the joints.(different from the joint deformation in Rheumatoid Arthritis) bone degeneration is not really a medical term, it is more of a description, people could use it to mean different things in different contexts.
