Why does osteoporosis occur only in women?

This is For a research Project!

Osteoporosis occurs in men also

Have a look at the wiki for a start. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/osteoporosi...
It doesn't. It also occurs in males, but not as often. I surmise that it may be because men use their muscles & lift heavier objects on a regular basis than women. This strengthens bone.

It doesn't happen in women only ,but it is most prevalent in women . When a person does heavy lifting routinely the bones tend to get thicker and denser with more calcium and minerals. Women also loose calcium during child bearing and isn't always replenished. So in the end, they have more pronounced bone degeneration.
Osteoporosis does not occur only in women. It is more common in women because females tend to have less body mass and rates of bone loss is directly related to this (e.g. Asians tend to be smaller and have higher rates of osteoporosis than Caucasians). In addition, women have a decline in their estrogen levels after menopause, which subsequently increases their bone loss. Men, on the other hand, have testosterone for much of their lives and this helps prevent development of osteoporosis. Men who lose their testosterone secondary to disease or medication are at increased risk for osteoporosis. Medications such as steroids or diseases such as hyperthyroidism can also increase osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis occurs primarily in women after menopause, because of the loss of estrogen. Osteoporosis is a thinning of the bones which can lead to fractures, loss of height, and the development of the "dowager's hump".

Calcium alone does not prevent this condition, nor does it necessarily rebuild bone structure. Calcium combined with vitamin D and magnesium does help some, but doctors usually recommend Fosomax or Actonel which helps prevent further bone loss. Other compounds may reverse bone loss and rebuild bone structure. The best sources of calcium are from food such as dairy products, salmon, sardines and leafy green vegetables.

Women most at risk are thin, Caucasian women with a family history of the disease, lead sedentary lives and smoke. Weight-bearing exercise is recommended to curtail bone loss. While osteoporosis is more common in women, men can have it also. Sometimes certain medications can accelerate bone loss. This is more than what you asked, but maybe you can use some of this info in your project.

Prior to menopause, women are protected by estrogen, but once the change occurs, bone loss can be very rapid during the first few years. There are tests that can determine bone density, which are painless and non-invasive.
