I am a male sufferer of osteoporosis, I was 43 when I broke my back. Are there any other men with O/P? |
I am keen to talk to men with osteoporsis, I counsell newly diagnosed males. I am an ambassador for the NOS, the only UK charity dedicated to help sufferers. I would be interested to find out how many replies I get to this mail. I was 43 when my back broke due to O/P, I was fairly fit and active, I didn't think this disease could affect men, especially young men. I think most men are ignorant to the dangers of O/P. 1 IN 5 men over 50 will suffer a fracture due directly to O/P. I speak to groups all over the UK, to raise both funds and awareness. Lack of exercise and calcium in your diet puts you at risk, also todays fat food culture is a factor. My own story is quite dramatic, I have been forced to retire form work as a sales director and have suffered further fractures, thankfully treatment and a change of lifestyle have helped. I am keen to help others avoid what happened to me. If you have o/p please contact me. Hi - osteoporosis is a very common disease that affects both males and females - but because it is a silent disease 75% of patients remain undiagnosed. As you found, once you have had a 'first fracture' you have a remarkably higher chance of getting a secondary fracture and this requires immediate treatment. Its so exciting to be living in a time where these kinds of treatments are available - before elderly women would be bent over 90 degrees with kyphosis. I think that the paradigm shift has definately occured with Drs that a) both men and woman are affected by this disease b) the importance of looking for patients with OP and c) the importance of treating these patients immediately. I think its a great benefit to promote awareness - and the importance of treating patients from a preventative point of view. You are a lovely man and I wish you luck with this scheme.xxxxx Hi tanks for the interesting message my father is 48 has just had a hip replacement, has broken 2 vertabrae and both his wrists and ankles over the past 2 years. I fully support your ideology and hope you make progress You might want to contact some of the men's support groups, like this one: http://www.maleosteoporosis.org/base.asp... |
