I want to be slim, but I also want to avoid osteoporosis for as long as possible. Any help?

I'm a teenager, and I don't think osteoporosis is in my family (is it hereditary?). If there are certain things to eat or exercises or stuff that can help avoid bone damage, please tell! Oh, and I have a disc bulge, which means I can't run on treadmills and stuff, but I can still do bicycling and ellipticals and such.

Very easy,

1) Make sure you're getting adequate Calcium and Vitamin D

Teenagers should be getting 1300 mg of Calcium (for example, 1 cup or 250 mL of milk has 300 mg of calcium) in order to help build strong healthy bones.

At least 400 IU of Vitamin D (can get it through pill form but milk usually has Vit D added to it, its also found in liver and eggs). Vitamin D helps with absorbing calcium.

2) Excercise (here are some examples of weight bearing exercise that strengthens bone: baseball, basketball, dancing
field hockey, frisbee, gymnastics, hiking, hopscotch, jumping rope, karate, push-ups, running). Cycling and swimming don't involve impact and don't strengthen bones.

3) Quit smoking if you do.

4) Limit your alcohol. If you drink alcohol, you should not drink more than two alcoholic beverages or drinks per day.

5) Avoid excess caffeine.

Hope that helps!

drink lots of milk. studies show that if you get enough milk when you're a teen and your body still absorbers calcium really quickly, it's important to eat enough foods with calcium.

Make sure you weight train. You can't run or anything which helps increase bone strength but you can definitely weight train! Make sure you consult your doctor before you start any weight training program, he/she can advise you best on what exercise to avoid because of your disc bulge.
do you realize that when asking this question you are being steorotypical to bigger people. i mean whats wrong with being a little bigger than everyone else.
