How sick and how much pain do you get when you have ovarian cancer?

How sick and how much pain do you get when you have ovarian cancer?

As with any other type of cancer, it really depends on what stage you are at when you are diagnosed. Ovarian cancer tends to have no symptoms (or very vague ones) during the early stages, so very often it is not diagnosed until stage 3 or later.

The pain and sickness associated with ovarian cancer usually comes from the treatment itself. An intensive regimen of chemo is often the source of great discomfort. If the disease has spread throughout the lymphatic system and has invaded other organs (common in stage 4), the prognosis is poor. It would be advisable to have a conversation with the oncologist to have him estimate the patient's expected survival time. It may be that the quality of remaining life would be better without having any treatment, rather than spending the remaining months very sick from chemo treatments.

But having said that, there are indeed patients that manage to survive for very long periods of time (four or five years, or more) with stage 4 ovarian cancer. No one knows for sure WHICH patients will make it, and have a decent quality of life. It is a very individual decision for each family as to how to proceed.
