My Mother has ovarian cancer, she just found out that her sodium level is low. What does that mean?

She probably had a chemistry screen to check for liver and kidney problems--both of which can affect the amount of sodium in the body. A malfunctioning liver can cause low sodium levels, for example. So can some medications like diuretics.
Two thirds of the body鈥檚 sodium is in the blood and 1/3 is in the bones. Sodium is taken in through food and drink and lost in sweat and urine. Sodium is stored in the muscle and cartilage tissue. If the kidneys are functioning normally, they adjust the amount of sodium. Any disruption in the balance between sodium intake and output affects the amount of sodium in the body.

Sodium is a salt and a part of the body鈥檚 electrical system. Example: Table salt has positive charged ions from the sodium content and a negative charge from the chloride

To maintain a normal sodium balance in the blood, the kidneys either put sodium into the bloodstream or spill it into the urine. Aldosterone (an adrenal hormone) stimulates the kidney to return sodium to the bloodstream. Aldosterone is responsible for holding on to the right amount of sodium. Then the pituitary gland secretes antidiuretic hormone, which signals the kidneys to conserve water. If you have too much or too little sodium in the body, it affects the way the body uses all the other minerals.

What Sodium Does in the Body: Essential to nerve impulses and contraction of muscles鈥?Helps to maintain acid-base balance鈥?Required to convert glucose to glycogen鈥?Balances fluids in the tissues 鈥urrounds all of the cells鈥?Regulates heart beat 鈥?Helps to keep other minerals in correct proportion.

The cause of ovarian cancer is not known. Genetics are a risk factor for some women. A family history of ovarian cancer is found in 10% to 20% of women with ovarian cancer.
It means that if she were to eat foods high in sodium, it probably wouldn't kill her and might even save her. It would definately knock out the yeast imbalance in her system which is causing the cancer.
I dont know, but tell her to stop eating sweets because sugar feeds the cancer's growth. Most doctors fail to tell their patients about that.
It depends on how low her sodium has gotten. It could be just a little low and not enough to worry about.
Sometimes when your on certain drugs, it causes your sodium to go low. Examples of that is Lasix or some chemotheraputic agents.
Sometimes cancer causes sodium to be low.
Her sodium level can be low if she is in treatment, such as chemo, if she is, the oncologist will do further investigation, if it's warrant. I had ovarian cancer and sometimes my sodium became low they usually check the reason for it, as sometimes the treatment such as chemo can affect the level. Good luck to your mom, I hope she makes it OK through the treatments and operations. You need to just be there for her, just listen when she needs to cry on your shoulders it's OK, to just be there and listen. Don't act like nothing is going on that's would be unfair to your mothers feelings please no pity parties for mom, she's a strong women and just needs a shoulder to lean on OK. You'll both be fine. drop me a line once in awhile if you need questions answered by someone who had ovarian cancer before.
