I still need some more info on Methadone for pain management please?

I am crently taking Oxycontin and oxycodone , and I was wondering if Methedone Is better for me. And as addictive. I want to have something that isn't as addictive and actually works for my Pain. I have A really Bad desease and I hurt 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. Someone please eslane to me what Methadone is , and is it safe or do you recomend it as a pain Killer. My Desease is really Bad and is concidered to be as painfull as chrones and cancer pain , so im very uncomfterble all the time.I just want to feel better and live my Life the same as I did before the illness came about.
Or If you have any other sugestions that might help me with pain. It dosen't have to be A Nocodic , but Im sorry I have tried just about every thing over the counter and it dosen't work. And also what about the patch , dose that work also. I think it is Called the Fentanol Patch. If You take either of these or know someone who dose please help me to know some more about them.
Thanks Again

One advantage of Methadone is that it has a 24/36 hour half life which is always usually borderline 24. Regardless of this halflife its threshold for pain analgesia is only about 8 hours; however taking it twice a day will not throw off what is in you. They say a therapuetic dose of Methadone for pain is anywhere from 60 to 120mg's. And once your on a dose, if your pain is bad I was told never to increase it more than 20mg's. However I say 10. It keeps a marginal flat blood level
almost constantly and if you compare that to other opiates on a graph it maintains a straight line throughout as other opiates fall. This is advantageous as it keeps the mental part of addiction in check. In other words like a Contin will drop in blood levels so do your moods. The flat margin of methadone virtually eliminates this element and you are always in a state of well being, thus why it works on addicts.

The advantages of Methadone for me was the fact I only had to take it twice a day and it is SUPER DIRT cheap!

The disadvantages were I could not take my last dose past 7pm or the drug would keep me up all night just like any other opiate. Therefore in the AM I was crashing off a large dose and the withdraw/break-thru was pure hell and being the drug takes an hour to work, I sat in agony for that time. Methadone is a tricky drug. ALthough in pain scenarios they will let you use other opiates with it, I really didn't see how they helped being that the methadone simply blocked the effects of them.

THe constipation for me was horrible and it never subsided. It is just like everything else but you need more MG's to manage your pain as opposed to conventional opiates. This is not a drug that one day you decide, "Oh it isn't working" and swallow 40mg's. It will kill you. Doses must be taken at the exact same time everyday until you know what your doing and than let your body talk to you. It is weaker than morphine and Milligram per milligram Hydrocodone and a Percocet is more powerful.

Its merit I think out way the bad. It is the most scrutinized drug on the planet. It supposibly does no liver damage or kidney damage and it has over 40 years of research on it. You do not mix with Benzo's, unless your taking just one a week or so for sleep. Benzo's bring up methadone concentrations but as the benzos stay in the blood the methadone get depleted.

The thing is, once your on it, your on it. It is a for life thing almost. A person that never took it and takes it for just three days, you will withdraw just off of 5mg's. And the withdraw is hell. It keeps all your receptors filled constantly. Don't ever buy into someone telling you it does not need to be increased, it does! If your gonna do it, just like everything else it is imperative you sustain your pain releif at the lowest possible doses, this is with everything but Methadone...you must! Looking back on it, I do not rec. it for long term pain management, your pain can vary from day to day from moderate to terrible but your methadone dose really can't. But my friend has been on it for years and takes 10mg's whenever he needs it and never had an issue. I got off it because I did not want to be 50 on 300mg's a day. But I was instructed wrong on how to first start taking it. And what else.............I can't think of anything as of now. Any other questions e-mail me.

Oh yea, And sad but true, Methadone is getting an exceedingly bad rap. I do not think it is justified but the stereotypes will always exist. One if people hears your on it, they equate it with Heroin addiction. Or you had a problem with pain pills. There are a lot of negative vibes that go with it.And it sucks, I don't think it is that bad and it was invented for pain to replace morphine for the Germans. Not for Heroin addiction.

I totally understand how constant pain can ruin your life. Methadone had me pain free for the first time in years but its a hardcore narcotic. It is basically man made heroin. When i was taking 60 Mg's a day i actually started noding out like a junkie. Pros vs cons i would recommend it for a last resort. You will probably be opium dependant for the rest of your life but being pain free is the best high in the world. Try subutex first if you can afford it.
