What is Pain Management? Is it just a Dr giving you meds for you pain, or is it more like a counselor tyring?

to help you live with your pain.. Or what exactly does it do?

A pain management clinic (it's usually a clinic) is a group of multi-disciplinary health care practitioners, including those who use alternate means of help. IT will includes MD's of just about any specialty, nurses, PT,s OT's, exercise therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncture practitioners, dentists, etc. Every one of these individuals specializes in treating chronic (6 month of more duration) pain within their particular field.

Further, MD's at such clinics have within their drug arsenal meds that many other doctors and most lay persons don't realize can be used to assist with pain management. You should understand that this might become a problem with your insurance plan, if you have one.

Everything that is done within a pain clinic is to help chronic pain patients to manage their pain. We are not talking here about pain relief, but about getting to the point that a pain patient can function reasonably well on a routine basis, not be pain free. Improved function is always the goal. Pain mgmt. docs work out a system to help you deal with your pain, whether that involves drugs, physical therapy, massages, cortisol injections, or breathing exercises to use when the pain is intense. The help you figure out how to ease, eliminate, or live with your pain.
Pain management is for chronic pain which persisted after many medications. There'r many modalities now for interventional treatment according to the type and the cause of the problem.
My pain management Dr. is a chiropractor and a a M.D. The first thing they do is a complete physical to understand why you are having pain. Then they set up a program to follow. This can be meds, exercises, manipulation and other pain mgt. such as meditation, yoga, bio-feedback. If you have a good pain mgt Dr. you'll have a combination of all the above. It has helped me, ask your family M.D. for a referral. Good Luck.
