Is there any option except Tylenol for pain management for someone allergic to codine?

My older relative is allergic to Codeine and is in considerable pain. She is at the end stage of her life. Are there any other options that I can ask her doctor to recommend?

Ultram is NOT a very strong painkiller. It's not even a narcotic, even though it acts on the same receptors as opiates. For MOST (but not all) people, it's roughly equivalent to taking an Advil or Aleve. It's a joke, and I wouldn't give it to a dog I liked for REAL pain, especially end-stage pain. Most people (including myself) who are allergic to codeine can take Hydrocodone or Oxycodone (which is stronger by a little bit) with no problem. They can usually also take morphine and Dilaudid without a problem. However, Demoral, Methadone, and Fentanyl are 100% synthetic, very strong, painkillers that would present absolutely no problems for someone with a codeine allergy, and are eminently appropriate for end stage pain. Norco, Ultran Vicodin
You need to speak with her doctor. There are pain medicines available that do not contain codeine. She should be able to have other pain medicines.Talk with her doctor, tell him her pain management program needs serious reevaluation.
Vicodin is a codine derivative... Ultram is a narcotic, but not in the codine family. Ask your doc or hers --- or even your pharmacist, as sometimes there are other medications that have drug interactions you may need to be aware of.
Good Luck
Ultram/Tramadol is not codeine based. Very strong painkiller. Rx only of course, unless if you want to email me I can tell you more about that.

Of course, if she is under the care of a Doctor HE should be recommending the medication, not the other way around. Also it depends on the cause of her pain, as to the choice of painkiller.
