I'm having some lower back pain with pain in the left and right butt muscle, and in the hips and pelvic area |
I lifted a heavy box and i've had a pain in the sides of my lower back, both sides of the butt area specifically for about 8 weeks. I've been seeing a doctor who took xrays and found no problems so he said its a muscle strain and it will take time to heal on its own. i'm also seeing a chiropractor and he recommended stretches, but the pain always comes back even though i do the stretches, it seems as though i pulled a muscle on both sides, and its very stiff and sensitive sometimes in the butt area and in the hips/pelvic area, and they say its a muscle strain, any idea on how long this condition can last or what is the best treatment?could it be the sciatic nerve? some people say use ice instead of heat, is it good to use ice? should i continue with the stretches, or is there any alternative treatment?i'm only 27 and never have been hurt like this ever, please help, i'm in a lot of pain especially if i sit or stand for too long, thanks so much for your help Sciatic nerve generally manifests on one side. It would be extraordinary to have it on both sides, especially due to a strain or accident. Xrays would have indicated a disc problem, so you probably don't have a serious disc problem. The muscle pain can compress the discs slightly or cause pressure on the nerves or both. A sciatic nerve would run from your backside, and radiate to your foot. I understand the pain, I had a back problem with 19 different diagnoses. After the first five days, ice is a good option, heat is not. However, one of the best things you can do for this situation is to get plenty of bed rest, laying flat on your back, and placing several pillows under your knees. Even a muscle strain can put pressure on your discs. By laying flat, with 0 or 1 pillow under your head, none under your back, and having your knees almost perpendicular to your body will reduce the strain if it is a disc problem or a nerve problem. Prepare to take it easy for at least a couple of months. I know you probably have to work, but spend as much time resting in bed in the position I have described. Ice will help also. Good luck. you should look into massage therapy you may have a knotted muscle in your hip With the symptoms you describe, I would say it is the sciatic nerve. You can use either ice or heat, whichever you prefer. I would suggest although is start w/ice and later down the line incorporate heat if you want to use both. As far as time is concerned, it varies to each individual and extent of injury. Any physical therapy is good just don't over do it. similar injury...4mos and going also check out webmd.com for more info Can you find a picture of a muscle called the Lattissimus Dorsi, and see if where it attaches is where the problem is?This muscle, altho low in the back, aids in using the arms and is connected to the upper arm, the mid to low back, the top of hips in the back, the sacrum-the hard bone in the back just above the coccyx (butt bone). This is probably not the only muscle that was injured. Your problem of sitting and standing is typical, tho I know that doesnt make you feel better. There is a product called Biofreeze that many people swear by for pain relief. A 4 ounce gel tube cost me $7.00 and is available at massage therapy schools and chiropractors (but a friend bought the same for $21.00 at her chiropractor) I highly recommend it. Also, and especially if you are overweight in front, an elastic brace around the back and closing in the front is very helpful and it also limits the movement of the back to the barest need for use. This area should be massaged by a therapist and stretched afterward while your muscles are still soft and warm.I had the chiropractors ultrasound treatment which was helpful, but when I told the ultrasound tech to use the transducer over my sacrum (a bone, and she didnt want to do so for lack of belief that it would help) anyway, that treatment over my sacrum really started the real physiological process of healing. Until then, everything else done had been useful for pain relief.When you have time, alternate heat and cold,3 minutes each, and do this 3 times for a total of 18 minutes to promote healing. Once a day is great, twice/three times better. How long will the problem last?My sis did the same thing and was back to work after a week of rest. Me, I did a different number on my back and I had problems for over 8 weeks. It depends on the severity of what you did.Have faith. It will heal. Just endure the best you can...but...know it will heal. |
