Please help! Vitamin A and Pregnancy?

Please help! Vitamin A and Pregnancy?
I was taking 10,000 IU of Vitamin A daily in the retinyl form of acetate and palmitate for about a month up until the day I found out I was pregnant.

As soon as I found out - I researched the type of supplements I was taking; to my horror, I found that 10,000 IU and more can cause serious birth defects since it's a synthetic form and is stored in the body for long periods of time.

I had no idea that 10,000 IU was more than four times the reccommended daily amount. I also saw 25,000 IU on the shelf and decided to take the smaller dose. I'm so worried that I've hurt my baby. If anyone has insight or information to ease my mind, it would be greatly appreciated.

(Please only knowledgable people answer)

Yes, large doses of Vitamin A do cause serious birth defects. That's why women taking drugs like Retin-A and Accutane (which are derivatives of Vitamin A) MUST be protected against pregnancy. However, for 10,000 IU, the risk of birth defects is 2.4 times that of women who took the daily value or less. You may want to start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, as folic acid has been shown to help prevent birth defects- but as with ANY and ALL supplements- it is IMPERATIVE that you discuss with your doctor or OB/GYN first. They are also the best people to inform you about any possible damage to the foetus. Communication between you and your doctor is vital- go ASAP.
