Short Term Disability Question Regarding Pregnancy???

I need some advice on this ............

I have been employed with this company since August of 2007, I became eligible for benefits as of Dec 1st 2007 , health,dental,etc..
although I was never informed that they offer short and long term disability. Neither by the hiring manager or by HR which is located in another state. I am 8 months pregnant due June 18th. I just found out by another co-worker that this company offers STD (including pregnancy). I am having a c-section.
I immediately called HR and was told that I can apply during open enrollment in July of 08.( funny right baby is due in june)
So is there any thing that I can do? I mean I was never advised nor offered this coverage, I really need this income. Please, Please any advice that can help me will be so much appreciated.

I would definitely speak up to someone. STD varies from state to state. Try and do some research on the computer. That's what I did no one told me either at work but my state offers it so I am going through them.
Good Luck :)

Thank you, But unfortunately Florida doesn't offer STD. The only protection they have is FMLA but that is unpaid, I really don't want to apply for state benefits like foodstamps and cash assistance, at only $300 per month that will not do much:( Report It

call the labor bored
