Spermicidal condoms for std and pregnancy prevention? |
Is it true that these condoms provide for a greater chance of spreading STD's (for men and for women)? I am equally concerned about preventing a pregnancy and possibly getting an STD... which condom would be the best? Spermicides (such as the stuff used on condoms) can increase a woman's susceptibility to infections, including HIV. This is because the chemical in spermicide irritates and creates microscopic cuts (microfissures) in the vaginal lining. These cuts serve as convenient entry points for viruses and other microbes. Scientific studies have not shown this to be a problem for men (because penis skin is keratinized and is tougher than vaginal epithelium). |
