Because many of the thousands of chemical in cigarettes cause birth defects. Fetuses are very sensitive to any chemicals because they are still developing. Anything taken in by the mother will effect the baby, including drugs, smoking, alcohol and nutrition. Additionally, blood vessels tend to narrow blood vessels, which can decrease the blood flow to the baby. Make sure the mother is taking folate supplements which reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Do not take Vitamin A supplementation, this can increase birth defects.
