Is it safe to take Metrogyl 400 in the second trimester of pregnancy if it is really a must ? |
I am suffering from amoebiasis and no weight gain. Hence have been advised the same. The net is not very encouraging. Please help. Yes,dear,it's safe. Metronidazole is contraindicated in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, between the 1st and 13th weeks. This is because at this time, organogenesis is taking place -your baby's nervous system,heart,liver,lungs,kidne... etc are being formed. Although studies conducted in pregnant rats, giving Metrogyl at 8 times the normal dosage/kg body weight in the 1st trimester showed NO adverse effects on either the mother or the foetus,we still don't give the drug in the 1st trimester in humans since animal studies do not always correlate well with humans. From week 14,however,all organs are fully formed, the heart beats strongly and basically the foetus just needs to lengthen and fill out.At this stage Metrogyl is definitely safe. l took it in my 22nd week in 2002 when l had gastroenteritis. It's safe. Source(s): Medical doctor with 2 kids! ask your midwife Ask your doctor who will tell you. i assume this metrogyl is a brand name and not the generic... different countries has different brands available... you mentioned amebiasis... im thinking metronidazole. thing is this drug is not proven safe for pregnancy. if you were given despiter pregnancy, you must have the invasive type... see your doctor. most likely not informed of your pregnancy... consult your doctor |
