Birth control pills for women contain estrogen and progesterone compunds.how this hormones prevent pregnancy? Normally there is a physiologic axis consisting of hypothalamus, pituitary gland and ovaries.Hormones secreted by the hypothalamus gland stimulate the release of hormones from the ovaries, such as estrogens and progesterone. When an extrinsic, synthetic hormone is administrated,as in contraceptive pills, this "axis" is supressed in a "negative feedback" way and so the release of naturally circulating hormones is blocked. When this happens,it is not possible for the fertilised ovum to be implanted in the female uterus, nor to grow into a human being. This is the first mechanism that explains how contraceptive pills work. The second mechanism is the thickening of the mucus produced by the female cervix,so that it gets more difficult for the sperms to reach the oviducts and fertilise the ovum. progesterone is a hormone that tells the body its pregnant, and when women are pregnant their ovaries dont release eggs, so basically the main way they work isby tricking the woman's body into thinking it is pregnant so there are no eggs released and thus she is not fertile while taking the pills. they have some other mechanisms though as well i beleive |
