There CAN BE some days sex is safe without pregnancy but it all depends on when you ovulate. It has nothing to with how long your cycles are. You would need to know when you ovulated and the way to find out cheaply is to take your temperature every morning at the same time as soon as you wake up and chart those temperatures on a graph (you can do this for free at www.fertilityfriend.com). Once you get a consistent ovulation pattern (to be safe you may want to wait at least 4 cycles) you can have sex at least 6 days before ovulation and you would be pretty safe. However there are always cycles that ovulation may come earlier or later so you will always be "at risk". With the pull-out method, there is always leakage from the guy before total ejaculation so that is not a safe option. The best thing is birth control if you must have sex. Technically the answer to that is "yes," but at the same time it's just so finicky ...

You ovulate two weeks before the start of your next period and are fertile for about twenty-four hours. Sperm can live inside a woman's body for a day or two, and a woman can get pregnant from pre-ejaculate (meaning the pull-out method isn't dependable) or if sperm even comes in contact with the outside of her vagina.

The timing thing is difficult, since one wacky cycle can throw off your calculations and result in a baby. A safer bet would be condoms or a birth control method prescribed by your doctor.
