What is the best way to prepare for surgery and long is recovery? |
I have to have major sugery on my leg/knee, they have to go in break the bones of my leg cut my tendons and everything and reenline everything I don't know what it is called, but my kneecap kepted puting out of place and grinding and poping I can't walk or do anything because of my pain. Doc said my legs bones are not enlined right and my tendons pull my kneecap to far up and its not on the right track which is why I am having problems. I have never had sugery befor and I'm very scared can someone help me like how to prepare what to expect and how long recovery may be? Bless your heart. I have had 11 knee surgeries so I can r really relate. The type of surgery you are having is and will be painful for the first few days. Ask your doctor to give you a PCA pump for a day or two after the surgery. The most important thing that I have done after any and all of my surgeries is the PT afterward!! It is just an important as the surgery. Recovery depends on your doctor. Check your doctor out. Make sure he is board certified and ask him how many of these particular surgeries he has performed. Make sure you have a GOOD orthopedic surgeon. I would recommend 2 opinions. I used ice packs alot and that really helped. Get you a aluminum grabber at Lowe's or home depot. It will help you Good luck. first keep yourself healthy and do what the drs say it can be 12 weeks and you follow the drs advice and have some one help you and if you can dont do the stairs and the drains in the knee keep them their until the dr tells you and they take them out . It would be a great idea to raise your immunity before the surgery. I would not have any coffee or junk food for about a month prior to the surgery. Also, arnica montana is a homeopathic remedy that helps the body prepare for trauma and helps the body heal after it. After the surgery, you should expect to feel rather groggy and in pain, but I am sure your doctor will prescribe strong pain killers for you. You should stay positive and follow all his orders, no one would know better than him/her. Good luck to you and boost your immunity, it will make your recovery easier. Well, as far as getting geared for surgery, the best thing you can do is remain calm and healthy (Staph infections are terrible but very prevalent in our hospitals today). You need to also talk to your doctor about it and get some good info on what you might need, (i.e. crutches, walker, wheelchair, complete bedrest, whatever) and then get these items. I think the recovery time would be 6 weeks or so depending on how quickly you heal. They will probably start you off in a cast with staples covering the incision w/ or w/out a PIC line or some type of drainage tube. Then after a week or so, they will probably have you come in to get the staples taken out and they'll either recast you for the remainder, or they will put on a walking cast. As far as the surgery goes, you might get discharged the day of and not even have to stay in the hospital. Like I said before though, any infection will delay the healing process. Good LUCK!!!!! A coworker's husband just had surgery to repair a broken tibia that never closed and to also repair some nerve damage. He's cut from an inch below his knee to his ankle then he has a couple of cuts on his feet for some of the nerve repair. He had his surgery 3 weeks ago on Friday and got his walking cast on Monday of this past week, (He got an infection). It takes many weeks approximately 8 for bones to heal. You should go to a rehab center for physical and occupational therapy after your surgery,if you have insurance.Keep a positive attitude, eat right, drink plenty of fluids, don't take aspirin or aspirin products and don't smoke before surgery. You should do fine.Good Luck RN |
