My dog is getting neutered in one week. What do I need to do to prepare him and my home for his surgery? You don't really need to do a whole lot for him. Give him some quiet time for about 24 hours or so, and for a few days, don't let him rough-house too much. The anesthesia they give the dogs is a short-lived one, but can (and often does!) make them groggy/sluggish for a day or so. When we had our puppy fixed, we were also told to watch his food intake the first day (we fed him small amounts at a time) and limit his fluid intake for the first day as well - just so he didn't get sick. Our vet also gave us some Pedialyte to give him in small amounts at regular intervals to prevent dehydration. Again, this was only for a day. And I'm sure the vet's told you, but you'll need to take up his food and water the night before so he's got an empty stomach, and they'll give you the appropriate aftercare instructions as well. Other than that, he should bounce back in no time!! You don't really have to do anything special, just don't let him jump on and off high places for a few days and give him lots of ear rubs. Just go easy on him like by not playing that rough until you start to see him get better. After surgery, just keep him in a quite place for a day..He will be a little groggy afterwards..Sometimes it doesnt even effect them much. Not a big ordeal for them..He will be fine.. Dogs usually cope easily with this surgery. For a few days you may need to give him pain or anti-inflammatory pills, and you should restrain him from jumping around when he first comes home. But you don't need to make any major changes in his or your routine. As with all surgeries, you shouldn't feed your dog after midnight the night before he goes into the vet's. You should give him a long and detailed list of reasons why you're cutting his balls off. I'm thinking you should sit him down and talk to him. Let him know you'll be there for him. Remind him that what you're doing for him will allow him to have the fun without the responsibility. Tell him it own't hurt . . . atleast not for too long. Just imagine the roles reversed and tell him what you would want to hear. |
